The Foruth Annual User Survey was sent to 432 members of the UM-BBD e-mail user list on April 9, 1999. 50 responded as of April 21, 1991 for a 12% response rate, less than last year.

Where responders chose two or more items in a question, their vote was divided by the number of choices they made, e.g. 2 choices each were counted as 0.5. User comments are reported on a separate page.

1. Professional Affiliation (choose one)

  9    18%  Industry

 31.5  63%  Academic

  7    14%  Government

  2.5 5% Other affiliation all consultants
===== ====
 50   100%
More consultants and fewer industrial people than last year.

2. Priority for UM-BBD development (choose one)

 31.5 63% More breadth (more pathways, reactions, and/or compounds)

 18.5 37% More depth (more information on each pathway, reaction
            and/or compound, or more features, such as search options)
===== ====
 50   100%
One respondent selected both. For the third year in a row, uses feel we most need more breath (more pathways).

3. What additional feature, format, or type of information would
    be most helpful?  (choose one)

  5.5  11%  More higher-level pathways (metapathways) which
            summarize information from several UM-BBD pathways.

 12.5 25% Ability to enter a compound structure and see structurally
            similar UM-BBD compounds

 29 58% Ability to predict biodegradation pathway(s) for
            compounds not in the UM-BBD

  3     6%  UM-BBD on a CD-ROM
===== ====
 50   100%
Users would find predictive ability and structure searching most useful. Few gave priority to metapathways or UM-BBD on a CD-ROM.

4. What additional feature, format, or type of information
    would you or your institution or organization be most
    willing to pay to use? (choose one)

 22    44%  Nothing

  1     2%  More higher-level pathways (metapathways) which
            summarize information from several UM-BBD pathways.

  7.5 15% Ability to enter a compound structure and see structurally
            similar UM-BBD compounds

  9.5 19% Ability to predict biodegradation pathway(s) for
            compounds not in the UM-BBD

  10   20%  UM-BBD on a CD-ROM
===== ====
 50   100%
Almost half of users would not pay for additional functions. The others would be most willing to pay for predictive ability, structure searching, or a UM-BBD CD-ROM.

5. What is the most useful type of UM-BBD information for you?
    (choose one)

 23.8 47.6% Pathways and Metapathways (text, graphics, significance
              statements, links to organism information, dynamic pathway
              generation)

 14.3 28.6% Reaction (text, graphics, links to literature, sequences,
              enzymes)

  7 14% Compound (text, graphics, formula, CAS Reg. Number, links)

  4.8 9.6% Useful Internet Resources page
===== ====
 50   100%
Pathway information remains most useful, followed by reaction and compound information.

6. What is your primary use for the database now? (choose one)

 18  36%  Research

 10  20%  Research and Development

  1   2%  Development

  0   0%  Development and Education

  5  10%  Education

 14  28%  Research and Education

  1 2% Other use regulatory use
=== ====
 49 100%
As in past years, research is the major use.

7. The NSF funding which allowed the UM-BBD to grow to its present
   size and functionality will end on June 30, 1999. Our next goal
   is development of a system to predict biodegradation pathways for
   compounds the UM-BBD does not contain. We are collecting letters
   from UM-BBD users on the value of such a prediction system.
   Are you willing to write such a letter?

27  57%  YES

20  43%  NO
== ====
47 100%

8. Any other comments, suggestions for pathways to include, etc.
