Hafnium has no known biological function. The ferric ion binding protein
(nFbp) from Neisseria gonorrhoeae can bind clusters of
Hf4+ in solution (Alexeev et al, 2003). Hafnium can be leached from zircon through the
activity of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (Becker et al, 1986).
